Here’s a new piece I just finished – meaning 10 minutes ago. It was inspired by a watercolor from one of my first art teachers, Mary Michels – I’m sure many of you in this area remember her tremendous talents. I’ve had the original hanging in our place in Mammoth for many years, and, although interpreting something into glass turns it into something completely different, I do offer it as a tribute to Mary. The piece is 24 x 30″, framed and ready for wall mounting. It’s a complicated work with fused glass, enamel, dichroic and tempered glass elements and, I must admit, framing it scared me a little, but there it is!

I’ve recently finished the second of my pieces inspired by last fall’s trip to India. This is from a photo I took in the countryside and it’s quintessential India; a building that seems to be put together from left over parts which is either still being built or already falling down, but covered with beautiful flowers growing out of every opening, and sagging telephone wires that don’t seem to be connected to anything. It’s magnificent in it’s own very special way!

THE GREEN SHOW

There’s an exciting show opening today, May 1st, at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery in Newbury Park, Ca. It features art made entirely from recycled materials, and, of course, glass is the grand-daddy of recycled material in general, but for this show I’ve created two pieces that take the recycling efforts one more step up. These pieces were created from glass left over from other projects, which were combined and remelted, resulting in spectacular designs and colors. The platter was cut from the resulting glass and slumped into a beautiful platter and for Green/Not Green, the resulting glass was further sliced and diced, and combined with copper elements.

I’ve added some new photos to the gallery, and especially wanted you to see the lighting fixtures I have done over the past year or so. I’m always happy to do custom fixtures – it’s a challenge and a delight.

Just returned from India where I got so much inspiration for new work that I can hardly wait to start. Meantime, I went to pick up this piece from the Thousand Oaks Art Association Membership Show, which took place while I was away, and surprise! – it had a “1st Place” award! That was so gratifying, and I’m going to take it along with me to the Holiday Marketplace this weekend.

STUDIO CHANNEL ISLANDS ART CENTER – 12th Annual Membership Show

The annual membership show at Studio Channel Islands Art Center in Camarillo, California begins on November 3rd and runs through November 26, 2012 with an Artist Reception on Sunday, December 4th from 4 to 6 pm. TOAA MEMBER SHOW

The Thousand Oaks Art Association Member Show will be running from November 16th to 29th at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery. I’m delighted to have two pieces represented there. Here are the pieces, “Color Burst Platter”, a 20″ platter – very dramatic”, and “Zipper #1″ an abstract wall hanging of two elements zipped together – a nice trick with glass”. What a thrill to be honored by the Ventura Music Festival when my piece “Capriccio” was officially installed in the Festival office on Santa Clara Street in Ventura. This could never happen without the generosity of donor, Barbara Meister, who purchased the piece and donated it to the Music Festival so that everyone could enjoy it. Thank you, Barbara, for your continued support to the Arts in Ventura.

Just got my new Delphi Catalogue. No, I’m not going to buy yet another kiln, but I was surprised to see myself in an “artist spotlight”. On the other hand, maybe I do need a 4th kiln?
